e4c Young Chefs Volunteer Program Facilitator

Program Description:

e4c Young Chefs is a cooking program for students in grade 4 to 6. Led by facilitators, small groups of children cook together, pooling their knowledge, skills, energy and ideas to make low-cost, healthy meals and snacks. In a supportive, fun environment children learn about food preparation, cooking/baking, food safety, kitchen clean up and teamwork. Students also enjoy eating the snacks and meals that they prepare.

Time, Schedule, and Commitment:

  • Approximately 3 hours/week for a maximum of 10 weeks
  • Sessions are held once a week during the calendar year (September-June)

Location: e4c Young Chefs has various locations in the Edmonton area

Responsibilities:

A Young Chefs Facilitator works in a team with two to four adult facilitators to provide the program to a group of students.

  • Co-facilitate a cooking class to a group of 8-12 students
  • Plan, gather recipes, activities and supplies for each session
  • Assist with set-up and clean-up at the school
  • Direct students through a recipe while teaching food safety
  • Facilitate learning by encouraging students through tasks
  • Engage students in a nutrition knowledge activity
  • Complete an evaluation form after each session

Skills, Abilities, and Knowledge Required:

  • Experience and enjoy working with children
  • Basic knowledge of healthy eating and Canada’s Food Guide
  • Cooperative and contributing team member
  • Organized, with good planning skills
  • Reliable and committed to offering a successful program

Screening Requirements:

  • Applicants must submit a resume and cover letter
  • Complete the interview process
  • Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Search
  • Child Intervention Check

Orientation/Training to be completed:

All volunteers are required to attend an e4c orientation session. Training specific to this role will be provided to the volunteer candidates, prior to session start dates.
