Seasonal Community Garden Developer – Community Development

Are you passionate about working with people from diverse backgrounds? Do you have experience in growing food or community garden programs? e4c Community Development Program is looking for Seasonal Community Garden Developer to lead an asset based community development model and support gardening activities at a variety of e4c sites.

 

Hours: Monday to Friday potentially some evening or weekend events.  The position ends September 5th, 2021.

In Your Role You Will

  • Use an asset based community development model, support gardening activities at a variety of e4c sites, in collaboration with e4c program site staff and volunteers.
  • Teach and support hands-on gardening skills through mentorship, educational activities, and workshops.
  • Promote and encourage gardening with members of the local community, with a particular focus on disenfranchised and isolated community members.
  • Support the development of a “sharing garden” for people facing food insecurity.
  • Provide support for garden planning, planting, maintenance, problem solving, harvesting, and clean up.
  • Facilitate positive relationships and community between all garden users and program participants.
  • Under the guidance of the program manager, build relationships with close neighbors, including people in nearby encampments or those who are unhoused.
  • Develop the Alex Taylor School Garden as a community gathering space.
  • Conduct tours, organize workshops, and host events in the garden space.
  • Promote the garden and events through a variety of means including posters, social media, and direct invitations to community groups.
  • Make regularly scheduled visits to different garden sites around Edmonton and deliver program materials as required.
  • Maintain the safety and cleanliness of the site, including the garden plots, outbuildings, and equipment.
  • Produce records, track participation, conduct evaluations, and submit an end of season report.
  • Participate in team meetings, workshops, and other organizational events.
  • Maintain communication with community partners, team, and supervisor on a regular basis.
  • Follow all recommendations relating to Covid 19 from AHS, e4c and community garden requirements.
  • Maintain e4c and Community Development Program standards.
  • Travel in a personal vehicle to different sites in Edmonton.

Education and Certifications

Required

  • Some post-secondary education related to areas of community development, social work, environmental studies, human ecology or a related discipline.
  • Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Intervention Record Check. (Please apply the date of your application)
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License, Vehicle Registration, Vehicle Insurance and Driver’s Abstract.
  • Access to a reliable vehicle.

Experience

  • Significant experience with community organizing and community outreach.
  • Experience and interest in gardening, especially food growing.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage with diverse populations.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills, including the ability to plan events and organize volunteers.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks at once and adapt to changing conditions (weather, volunteer cancellations).
  • Ability to teach gardening concepts to a variety of learners.
  • Working outdoors in all weather conditions while performing manual labor.
  • Willingness to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including public speaking.
