A Story from School Nutrition
There is one student in kindergarten who struggles with food security and behaviour issues.
He would come to school each day and continuously eat crayons because that’s what he does at home.
The kindergarten teachers had asked for something they could use to replace the crayons he was eating daily. Keeping in mind that he is only 5 years old and all 5 year olds are typically picky, we started trying different options.
We tried cheerios and pretzels at first and he wouldn’t even touch it. One day I sent a bag of Shreddies, and from that day on, the teachers have been switching out the crayons for Shreddies! It’s working:) He loves Shreddies, and had never had them before we gave them to him.
The student is now learning that we don’t eat crayons, and trusting that there is food security in our school! Not only has the replacement of Shreddies helped him fill his body with nutritious food and improve his overall health, the teachers have also noticed an improvement in his behaviour!
